At 12 years old, Scott Cain started sailing. Built his first boat when he was 16 in high school woodshop, apprenticed at Cape Fowlweather Boat Company under Joe McGlasson, premier west coast naval architect and boatbuilder (1970's). McGlasson, known for building the first Islander sailboats- he was commissioned to build a boat for Howard Hughs, and had Bruce King, famous yacht designer for Ericson Yachts, apprentice under him. Scott Cain worked under McGlasson until 1976. In 1977 he worked under Howard Gartula, Ilwako Boat Works, Washington. In May of 1977, an opportunity arose to sail to Spain through the Panama Canal on a Sparkman & Stephens 48' ft Yawl. After a two year voyage he came back to San Diego to confidently establish Cain Shipwright (1980). Cain Shipwright specializes in design and construction- wood and fiberglass, wooden boat remodeling and the repair of yachts and commercial vessels.
